The building envelope is all of the elements of the outer shell that maintain a dry, heated, or cooled indoor environment and facilitate its climate control. Building envelope design is a specialized area of architectural and engineering practice that draws from all areas of building science and indoor climate control.
The most common and costly problems associated with the performance of a building envelope are related primarily with excessive air leakage and water intrusion. In particular, windows, doors and curtain walls, as well as their interface with the adjacent wall construction, are determining elements in the performance of the building envelope. Improved standards and design principles have contributed in significantly improving the performance of window; doors and curtain wall systems, whether it is with respect to resistance to water penetration, air leakage resistance, wind load resistance or condensation resistance. The reality, however, is that many buildings of recent construction are still experiencing problems with the in-service performance of installed window and curtain wall systems. Typically, these problems are often the result of poor installation, fabrication and lack of adequate quality control.
We focus on evaluating the field performance of windows, doors and curtain walls within the buildings envelope.
You've finally installed the decorative concrete masterpiece of your dreams. Maybe it's a pattern-stamped pool deck or patio, an interlocking paver driveway, an acid-stained floor, or an exposed-aggregate walkway.
Protecting and properly maintaining that concrete will keep it looking spectacular for many years to come while extending its service life. And even if the surface begins to show wear after years of exposure to traffic and the environment, you can often restore its original beauty with special cleaning, stain removal, and polishing products.
